Fair is fair: those who enjoy tinkering themselves and have the time will do well with self-hosting: cheap and with maximum control. ns.10be.de is for everyone who simply wants it to work.
From 2014 to today: why it's now so easy
Running Nightscout yourself was never a “quick job”: ns.10be.de is the result of years in which exactly this effort was automated away:
- 2014–2017 The beginnings. Nightscout emerges as “CGM in the Cloud”: built by parents of children with type 1 diabetes (#WeAreNotWaiting). Setting it up meant: cobbling together Azure/Parse, an mLab MongoDB and GitHub yourself, configs by hand: often a whole evening for the technically experienced.
- Heroku era A bit easier, but… Move to Heroku: still create an account, set up the database add-on and type dozens of environment variables by hand. In 2022 the free tier disappears, and many are suddenly left without a server.
- 10be until ~2020 Managed, but still with manual steps. ns.10be.de takes over the operation: significantly easier than DIY, but individual steps still run manually.
- today One click, three seconds. Server in under 3 seconds, everything by click instead of typing config, self-healing in the background, automatic updates and backups, thousands of alarm rules as a safety net: classic Nightscout and new Nocturne view included.
