CarbCam is not a medical device within the meaning of the EU Medical Devices Regulation (MDR, Regulation (EU) 2017/745) and is neither approved nor certified as such. The app does not constitute medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment and, in particular, does not replace consultation with a physician, a diabetes educator, or a registered dietitian.
The values displayed by the app (carbohydrates, calories, fat, protein, fat-protein units/FPU, glycaemic index) are AI-based estimates derived from a photograph and an inferred portion assumption. They are neither validated nor guaranteed.
Estimation accuracy varies by meal type:
Hidden ingredients (sauces, fats, sugar), unknown portion sizes, unfavourable lighting, or unusual camera angles can lead to considerably larger deviations. It cannot be ruled out that the app may, in individual cases, return significantly too high or too low values.
CarbCam does not provide dosing recommendations for insulin, oral antidiabetic agents, or any other medication. The optional Nightscout integration serves solely for the visualisation of blood-glucose trends and the synchronisation of meal entries as treatments — it is not a closed-loop component and does not interact with closed-loop control systems (e.g. AAPS, Loop, AndroidAPS, Tidepool Loop).
Any transfer of the displayed carbohydrate estimates into a bolus calculation — whether manual, via a bolus calculator, or via an automated system — is carried out entirely at the user’s own risk and must be based on an independent plausibility check.
CarbCam is intended as a supplementary tool for adults living with diabetes mellitus (type 1, type 2, MODY, LADA), for their family members, and for anyone interested in nutrition.
The app is not suitable for:
In medical emergencies (severe hypoglycaemia, ketoacidosis, suspected insulin overdose, etc.) do not rely on the app. Instead, contact emergency services immediately (112 in Germany, Austria, and across the EU) or go to the nearest emergency department.
Estimates are computed with the help of external AI providers (Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT, Zhipu GLM, or Azure OpenAI — depending on configuration). The respective models are updated regularly; consistency of estimates over time or between providers is not guaranteed.
Public nutritional databases (USDA FoodData Central, Open Food Facts) are used for plausibility checks. These may also contain incorrect or outdated values.
Use of CarbCam is entirely at the user’s own risk. The provider shall not — to the extent permitted by law — be liable for any damages, in particular hypo- or hyperglycaemia and their consequences, arising from reliance on the displayed estimates. Details on liability can be found in the Terms of Service, §8.

Concrete error reports including a photo help us identify systematic sources of error and improve the models and plausibility-checking logic.
